On Case Concord: the Syntax of Switch-reference Clauses

چکیده

This paper discusses switch-reference (SR) systems in Pano and Muskogean languages, and propose that grammatical case plays an essential role in licensing same subject SR constructions in these languages. Specifically, case activates an agreement relationship between two clauses, allowing for transmission of information about participant coreference. Different subject SR, on the other hand, does not involve case concord, but signals the activation of a discourse participant that was either inactive in the background or not present.

Wh-Concord in Okinawan = Syntactic Movement + Morphological Merger

The main purpose of this paper is to provide a novel account for Wh-Concord in Okinawan based on the Copy Theory of Movement and Distributed Morphology. We propose that Wh-Concord interrogatives and Japanese-type wh-interrogatives have exactly the same derivation in the syntactic component: the Q-particle ga, base-generated as adjoined to a wh-phrase, undergoes movement to the clause-final posi...

Is there Switch-Reference Marking in Coordinated Clauses?

The question of whether there are languages which exhibit switch-reference marking in coordinated clauses has emerged to be a very important one for the whole topic of switch-reference and interclausal dependencies. In this paper, I examine all languages claimed to have switch-reference marking in coordinated clauses in detail. I will show that in all languages in question switch-reference mark...

Complementiser Phrase: The Case of English Wh-Embedded Clauses

English main-clause wh-questions form complementiser phrases with wh-words preposed to spec-C position. This is because English wh-words, as verb-complements originally, are strong enough to trigger wh-movement and auxiliary inversion. Persian EFL learners encounter an over-differentiation problem regarding the acquisition of auxiliary inversion rule in English standard questions. Once they hav...

Modal Concord: A Case Study of Dutch

The combination of a modal verb and a modal adverb that is similar in modal force (possibility/necessity) and flavor (epistemic/deontic, etc.) allows a concord interpretation in which the two modals somehow ‘fuse’ and communicate just a single modality. This paper presents a case study of modal concord, as it is exemplified in Dutch. It seems that speakers of this language tend to add modal adv...

Subordinate clauses, switch-reference, and tail-head linkage in Cavineña narratives*

Tail-head linkage is a discourse pattern which consists in repeating, at the beginning of a new sentence, the main verb of the preceding sentence for discourse cohesion. This pattern, which is rarely discussed in general typological work, is widespread in certain areas of the globe, in particular Papua New Guinea. In this paper, I report a case of tail-head linkage in Cavineña, an Amazonian lan...
